The Journey 70km scenic drive through the countryside. Enjoy views of endless rice fields and local wildlife. Historical context: As you take in the peaceful scenery, your guide will share how this “free target zone”—once heavily destroyed during the war—transformed into the resilient community you see today.
The Cu Chi Tunnels are a vast underground network stretching over 250 kilometers and remain one of the most significant historical sites of the Vietnam War.
Originally created in 1948, the tunnels were built to support the Viet Minh in their fight for independence against French colonial forces. Construction continued for more than 25 years, gradually expanding into a fully functional underground city.
This hidden world included living quarters, kitchens, storage areas, weapon workshops, field hospitals, and command centers. At its peak, the tunnel system housed thousands of people who lived almost entirely underground for years.
Despite the harsh conditions, daily life continued. People married, raised children, and maintained a sense of normalcy beneath the surface. During the American War, the Cu Chi area was designated a free-fire zone and endured intense bombing and military attacks.
In 1988, two sections of the tunnel system were opened to the public. Today, visitors have the opportunity to explore this remarkable site and gain insight into the ingenuity and resilience of those who lived and fought here. Designed with clever “moving parts,” the tunnels were engineered to remain livable for extended periods of time.
For those interested, there is also an optional opportunity to fire a war-era M16 or AK-47 at a nearby shooting range. (This activity is optional and shooting range fees are not included.)
